My name is Daniel Guzman, and I’m originally from Puebla, Mexico. I’ve been coming to Canada to work on this farm for over 10 years now, growing peppers and Brussels sprouts. Back in Mexico, I own a small farm where we grow crops like broccoli, onions, cilantro, and corn, and I also raise some beef cattle. Years ago, after facing difficulties with my farm, I decided to come to Canada to earn money and invest in my land, and it’s helped me build a better future for my family.
I have a wife named Veronica and three boys, aged 13, 12, and 6. They’re full of energy and keep the house busy! Being away from them is tough, but I come here to work so I can provide for them and give my children a better life and education. It’s a big sacrifice, but I want them to have opportunities that I didn’t have when I was young.
Working here in Canada has taught me a lot. I’ve learned things about farming that I can take back home and use on my own land. Even though I’ve been here for many seasons, I still find enjoyment in the work, especially when it comes to harvesting the crops. There’s something satisfying about working in the fields and seeing the results of our efforts.
Outside of work, I like spending time with the friends I’ve made here. Since many of us are away from our families, we’ve become like a family to each other. We often share meals together after work, and sometimes we’ll go fishing or head into town to buy things to take home to Mexico, like gifts for our loved ones. It helps us stay connected to our roots.
Living in Canada has been a unique experience. The food is good—though I prefer the traditional food from home—but I do enjoy Canadian favorites like hamburgers. My boys back home are always curious about what I do here, and they love when I send pictures or videos of me driving tractors or forklifts. They get excited about the idea of one day having their own farm.
