My name is Sheldon Edwards. I’m from the countryside in Trinidad and Tobago. I have been coming to Canada since 2001. I have worked all over Ontario on lots of different types of farms. I have worked with flowers, potatoes, asparagus, berries and now apples, pears and cherries.
I also do farm work back home, like gardening. We are growing things like bananas, cassava, dasheen(taro), sweet peppers, hot peppers and eggplant. When I am not home, my cousins do it.
I am not going home this winter, I am going to stay and work on another farm. I like working to get money together so things can be good and comfortable back home. I have a son and a daughter. I also have one grandbaby. She is seven months old, because I am here I haven’t met her yet so I will get to see her when I get back home next.
We have a football (soccer) team here at Schuylers. To make the team, we have sessions every two or three days and pick the best players. We put them out on the field to play and figure out the positions. Then we get together and practice and make it happen. Sometimes we practice three or four times a week but this year cherry season was long. It wasn’t enough to get in the condition that we needed.
We didn’t get together in time, so we didn’t get enough practice before the tournament. Next year is supposed to be the year we will win!
The tournament was good; it is fun to get together people from different countries. There are teams of workers from lots of different countries from lots of other farms around here. It is fun to get everything together, be around more people, and play together out on the field.
